VideosThe historic CITGO sign in Kenmore Square, a Boston icon since 1940, returned to the evening skies on September 17, 2010. As promised, baseball fans were among the first to see the famous sign light up the skyline after a three month absence. The sign “went dark†in July for a major renovation. The landmark sign has withstood temperature extremes, from heat to cold, hurricanes and ice storms, lighting strikes and high winds, for many years. The resulting weather exposure had faded the colors and caused damage to the lights. In an effort to keep this Boston landmark shining clear and bright, CITGO turned to Federal Heath Sign to renovate and upgrade the approximately 9000 linear feet of lights on the sign with the most technologically advanced LEDs available. Environmentally, the new lights will only use about half the electricity of the old lights. New flexible connections allow for expansion and contraction, which prevent cracking and potential water/wind damage. Enhanced materials that withstand damaging UV rays will protect the sign’s bright white, blue and red CITGO colors. The CITGO sign is double-sided, approximately 60 feet by 60 feet and believed to be the largest sign in the New England region. It uses 218,000 LEDs to light its image and remains on from dusk to dawn, except during the global Earth Hour initiative each year.
